Appearing in Perplexity means it cites your page as a source beside its answer. Perplexity searches the live web for nearly every question, then summarizes and links the few sources it trusts most.
How Perplexity picks and cites its sources
Perplexity runs a web search for nearly every question, reads the top results and writes an answer with numbered citations pointing to the pages it used. Because sources are always shown, it is the easiest engine to check: you can see at once whether you were cited and who was cited instead.
According to its documentation, Perplexity uses two agents. PerplexityBot indexes pages so they can be surfaced and linked in answers, and Perplexity says it is not used to train foundation models. Perplexity-User fetches a page when a person asks about it, and Perplexity says this user-triggered fetcher generally does not follow robots.txt because a person requested the visit.

Open with the answer
Put a direct two-to-three-sentence answer in the first paragraph, then add the detail. If a reader stopped there, they should still get the point.

Write section headings the way people ask them, one question per section, so each block can stand alone as a cited passage.

Add dates, named sources and figures you can back up, plus a visible updated date that you actually maintain.

How does Perplexity choose sources?

Can I block or allow Perplexity?
Yes. Control PerplexityBot in robots.txt: allow it to be indexed and linked, disallow it to opt out. Keep pages fast and server-rendered either way.
Does robots.txt stop every Perplexity visit?
Not necessarily. Perplexity says PerplexityBot follows robots.txt, while Perplexity-User, which fetches a page at a person's request, generally does not. Use robots.txt for indexing decisions and firewall rules if you need to stop specific fetches.
Why am I not cited?
