How Microsoft Copilot picks and cites its sources
Copilot and Bing's AI-generated answers retrieve from Bing's index and cite the pages they used, so Bing ranking and crawlability are the foundation. Bing Webmaster Tools now includes an AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, that shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries and the grounding queries behind each citation.
Microsoft's guidance is practical: use IndexNow to tell participating search engines when content is added, updated or removed, and improve depth, structure and clarity with headings, FAQs and cited sources. Bing is also one of the search providers OpenAI names for ChatGPT search, so Bing work can pay off beyond Copilot.

What does Copilot use to answer?
Copilot's web answers are grounded in Bing's index and cite the pages they used, so Bing crawlability and ranking are foundational, plus clear, factual, structured content.
Do I need Bing SEO specifically?
Yes. Because Copilot retrieves from Bing, working on Bing directly (Webmaster Tools, Bingbot access, IndexNow) affects your chances. A Google ranking doesn't automatically carry over.
How do I track whether Copilot cites me?
Use the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools for citation counts and grounding queries, and ask your own buying questions in Copilot from time to time. SeoWave does not measure Copilot directly today.
