What is Answer engine?
An answer engine responds to a query with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews are answer engines. They retrieve, summarize and cite sources, so visibility means being inside the answer, not ranking beside it.
Why answer engines matter
With a classic search engine, the user picks from ten links and lands on a site. An answer engine does the reading for them and returns a synthesized reply, so visiting a source becomes optional. The set of brands visible to the buyer shrinks to whatever the answer names or cites, which raises the stakes of being included.
How an answer engine works
The engine interprets the question, sometimes rewrites it into one or more search queries, retrieves pages from a web index, selects the most relevant passages and has a language model write an answer, usually with citations back to the pages it used. Some replies come mostly from the model's training memory without any retrieval, and both routes matter for your brand.
Engines differ. Google's AI features draw on Google's index, Copilot is tied to Microsoft's search, and Perplexity is built around searching first. Because of that, each engine should be checked on its own, using the same set of questions so the results can be compared.
A hypothetical example
Imagine a freelancer in Chile asks an assistant how to issue electronic invoices. A classic results page would list ten links and some ads. The answer engine instead writes a short explanation, names three tools and links four sources. Only the brands and pages inside that reply are visible to the freelancer; a tool that ranks eleventh in classic search may not appear at all.
Common mistakes
- Treating every engine as the same. Retrieval, freshness and citation behavior differ.
- Assuming a first-page Google ranking guarantees being cited.
- Overlooking answers built from model memory, where there is no source list to inspect.
- Never asking the engines about your own brand, so wrong or missing information goes unnoticed.
Common questions
Is Google an answer engine?
Partly. Google Search still returns classic results, but features such as AI Overviews behave like an answer engine by summarizing and citing sources at the top of the page.
Do answer engines send traffic?
Some, through the links they cite, but usually less than classic search and with a different pattern. Measure AI referrals in your analytics rather than assuming.
